As some of you guys will have noticed I have decided to have a wee play with FPV. I am doing this on a budget and thight I would post here what I have bought and plan to buy. The model that I am using at the moment is a standard Wot 4 Foam-E. I have bought a camera and 5.8gig rx / tx system so I can view it in realtime using video goggles. I have not purchased the Video Goggles yet as Hobbyking do not have them in stock yet. Link to camera http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=16461 Link to rx/tx system http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=15295 I have fitted this all into my Wot 4 and it went for its maiden flights on the 8th January 2012. As I didn't have any goggles I used a portable colour TV to view the video on. On the initial videos it was evident that I could benifit from some form of artificial horison as when climbing without any horison showing then you don't know what angle the model is at, it could have rolled or banked without noticing so some thought would have to be given to this. I have uploaded the videos from both these flights to Youtube . Video 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pd_nbF1gdKQ Video 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8RmQkdXFcTc As can be seen in the videos the model was not the steadiest despite it being quite calm when they were recorded so I decided to install a gyro on the aileron servos to see if this would help. After a bit of searching around Steven came up with a cheap heading hold gyro that he had removed from his Trex 600 and said I could try it. This was installed and tested out on 22/01/12 in the strong winds we had which I guess were 15-20mph. For this first flight I didn't video anything and spent most of the flight setting the gain on the gyro so the wings wouldn't rock. Once this was sorted out it made flying the Wot 4 like it was a calm day. I also experimented with knife edge which is now locked in and only requires rudder input once the model is on its side. For the 2nd flight of the day I set up the video equipment and recorded the flight. Rod had given me a small lightweight TV to use instead of my heavy portable which works fine just need to get a screen set up to shield it from the strong sunlight. Here is a video taken on 22/01/2012 in blustery conditions http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hG6ZDVYw2PY | |
